ox-review/ But if you can place your QNAP beside your HDTV /AVreceiver, you can use the QNAP to play KODI via HDstation.While Plex Media Server can run on many different devices, such as computers, NAS devices, routers, etc. This himedia h8 doesn't do 4k though if you don't mind. This way i can stream over my network via wifi to playback my 1080p SSA content. Himedia H8 seems like a good device for KODI. Or you can get an android box to WORK WITH the QNAP. bottomline The qnap is mostly storage, but can double up as a video player using either plex, kodi, or you can do what i do and just browse via SMB to the share folder, and play on your pc using MPC-HC (lavfilter, xysubfilter, MADVR) for proper highest quality 10bit playback for videos with no issues. but requires direct hdmi to hdtv to work. Kodi also might be able to handle it too. considering the players codec and sub support it probably can play ssa subs just fine. There is a direct play in videostation, but it requires usage of a certain player which i dislike using.
qnap can support 10bit h264, but the problem is 1080p with high bit rate which undergo forced transcoding, except some models with beefier cpus.
I don't think TVS series with i7's have this performance issue with transcoding for high bit rate 1080ps. problem with that is, it kicks in transcoding, which depending on your model may have issues playing unless you set it to 720p or low bit rate 1080p. However you can play on plex SSA just fine. I never tested if a ripped SSA subs would work. But it does allow you to select external subs. The default videostation does not support SSA subtitles embeded into say a MKV video.
